The Elder Scrolls Online, or ESO, is a popular online role playing fantasy game, intricately connected to the larger series of The Elder Scrolls action fantasy games that include The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
These games firmly established the look of ESO too, unifying the styles and environments of the earlier games by binding them to one large continent, Tamriel. This sprawling land mass allows for a combination of opposites: the rugged and sparse Norse lands of Skyrim easily blend in with the 'alien' landscape of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, that has an almost psychedelic plant life. Thematically, ESO also stays as close to the earlier games as it can be, riffing on well-established medieval fantasy themes and styles.
ESO first launched in 2014 and has since seen many expansions and updates, such as the popular Morrowind expansion (based on the world of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind), and the recent and massive Gates of Oblivion expansion. In the game, players have ten different races to choose from, and are free to select their own adventures, story lines and playing style in the open-world game.
