The art was originally released as promotional art for War for Cybertron: Siege, with a line-up of Decepticons featuring Megatron, Shockwave, Soundwave, Laserbeak, Ravage, Starscream, and Thundercracker.

As the first installment of the War for Cybertron toy and multimedia trilogy, announced February 2018, War for Cybertron: Siege featured character designs that looked more battle-damaged and gritty than those that came before, to emphasize the war aspect.
