Capcom (1979) is a Japanese video game developer and publisher, famous for its iconic Mega Man, Street Fighter, Monster Hunter and Resident Evil series. Known in the mid-1990s as a studio that favored old-fashioned 2D visuals over fashionable 3D graphics, Capcom never sought to be seen as a '2D studio'. Rather, 2D fighting games like Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors (1994) merely capitalised on Capcom’s runaway success with its Street Fighter games, using the same side-on perspective. Capcom’s outstanding portfolio of 3D games proves the point: the Monster Hunter, Devil May Cry, and Resident Evil games continue to enjoy huge success worldwide. Stylistically, these games are wildly different from one another, but all profit from studio creatives who know how to tie artistic imagination to fine gameplay.
